Known as Australian sport’s greatest rivalry, Rugby League’s State of Origin is a contest that is touted as the pinnacle of the sport.
Before 1980, players were only selected for interstate matches based on where their club side was from and under these selection rules, Queensland was not generally competitive. Starting in 1980 there were two interstate matches under the former selection rules, and one experimental “Stage of Origin match was played.
This experimental game saw a sell-out Queensland crowd, eager to watch Queensland heroes like Arthur Beetson represent their home state for the first time. Inspired by their home fans, Queensland won the match (20-10) and State of Origin was born.
